What is lead?
Lead is a naturally occurring element found in small amounts in the earth's crust. While it has some beneficial uses, it can be toxic to people and animals and may cause health effects.
Who is at risk?
Children are especially vulnerable because their growing bodies absorb more lead and their brains and nervous systems are more sensitive. Adults, including pregnant women, can also be exposed through food, water, dust, soil, renovation work, certain jobs, hobbies, and other sources.
How can I tell if my home contains lead?
The only way to know for sure is to have a professional lead inspection and testing performed.
What is the New Jersey lead-safe law?
The existing site explains that rental dwelling units built before 1978 may need lead-based paint inspection based on the law and local requirements. Because local requirements and legal guidance can change, contact your municipality or a qualified inspector about your property.
My unit was renovated. Do I still need an inspection?
Even a fully renovated rental may still need an inspection unless a lead-free certificate was issued at the time renovation was completed. An XRF inspection may be an option that avoids recurring inspection for some properties.
What does a visual assessment cost?
The published price is $200 per unit for a visual assessment inspection. The inspection checks paint deterioration, lead hazards, friction surfaces, impact surfaces, and dust hazards.
What does a dust wipe inspection cost?
The price is $200 per unit (regardless of size) + Lab fee per sample.
